    Patient FAQs

    Frequently Asked Questions — Urology

Laser surgery is now the gold standard for kidney stone treatment in virtually all cases. Unlike open surgery which requires a large incision, significant blood loss and a 5–7 day hospital stay, laser procedures (RIRS, URSL or mini-PCNL) are done through the natural urinary passage or a tiny puncture with no scar. Most patients are discharged the next morning and return to work within 2–3 days. At Meds Hospital, we offer all three laser techniques and our urologist selects the right approach based on your stone’s exact size, location and number on CT scan.

The procedure typically takes 30–90 minutes depending on stone size and complexity. It is performed under general or spinal anaesthesia so there is no pain during the procedure. After surgery, a thin ureteric stent (a small plastic tube) may be placed temporarily to keep the ureter open while swelling settles — this is usually removed in clinic after 1–2 weeks. Most patients go home the next morning and resume desk work within 2–3 days. Physical activity can be resumed within 1–2 weeks.

TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate) is the surgical gold standard for BPH that has not responded adequately to medications. A resectoscope is passed through the urethra — no external cut — and excess prostate tissue is removed. It relieves urinary obstruction in over 90% of patients. Regarding sexual function: retrograde ejaculation (dry orgasm — semen goes into bladder instead of out) occurs in about 60–70% of patients after TURP and is permanent, though not physically harmful. Erectile function is generally preserved. Our surgeon discusses all aspects of sexual health candidly before your procedure.

Both TURP and HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of Prostate) are effective treatments for BPH with no external incision. TURP is the time-tested gold standard and works well for most prostate sizes. HoLEP has several advantages over TURP: it can treat very large prostates, causes less bleeding (suitable for patients on blood thinners), requires a shorter catheterisation period, has lower rates of recurrence and has a faster return to normal flow. The right choice depends on your prostate size, general health and medication profile. Our urologist will recommend the most appropriate option after examining you.

Success depends significantly on the underlying cause. The most common and treatable surgical cause of male infertility is varicocele (dilated veins around the testis that raise testicular temperature and impair sperm production). Microsurgical varicocele repair improves sperm parameters in 60–70% of men, with natural conception rates of 30–50% within 12 months. For men with absent sperm (azoospermia) due to obstructive causes, TESA or PESA procedures can retrieve sperm for IVF/ICSI, with very high success rates. Our male infertility specialist works in co-ordination with fertility centres to give every couple the best possible path to parenthood.

Kidney stone recurrence is common — about 50% of patients have another stone within 5–10 years without preventive measures. At Meds Hospital, after treating your stone, we run a personalised stone prevention programme: we analyse the stone composition, conduct a 24-hour urine metabolic test, and design a programme that typically includes drinking 2.5–3 litres of fluids daily (especially water), dietary modifications specific to your stone type (reducing oxalate, sodium or animal protein), and in some cases targeted medication. This reduces recurrence risk by over 50%.

Yes. Urinary incontinence (involuntary urine leakage) is a very common condition — especially in women after childbirth and in men after prostate surgery — but it is significantly underreported due to embarrassment. At Meds Hospital, we offer a complete evaluation including bladder function test (urodynamics) and a range of treatments: pelvic floor physiotherapy, medications, minimally invasive procedures (tension-free vaginal tape / midurethral sling for women) and urethral bulking injections. You do not need to live with incontinence — effective treatment is available.
