Knee replacement is recommended when all non-surgical options have been tried and failed — that includes weight management, physiotherapy, anti-inflammatory medications and cortisone or PRP injections. If your X-ray shows bone-on-bone arthritis (no cartilage left), you have severe pain at rest or at night, and daily activities like walking and climbing stairs have become significantly impaired, surgery is almost always the best next step. Our surgeon will review your X-rays and give you an honest assessment — surgery is never our first recommendation.
A total knee replacement (TKR) replaces all three compartments of the knee joint. A partial (unicompartmental) replacement (UKR) replaces only the damaged compartment — usually the inner (medial) side. UKR offers faster recovery and a more natural-feeling knee, but not all patients are candidates. Our surgeon will determine the appropriate type based on your X-rays and clinical findings.
Modern high-quality knee implants are designed to last 15–25 years or more. Studies show that 90–95% of replacements are still functioning well at 15 years. Longevity depends on implant quality, surgical technique, patient weight and activity level. We use internationally certified implants with proven track records and offer long-term follow-up every 2–3 years.
Yes — bilateral simultaneous knee replacement is offered at Meds Hospital for suitable patients. The advantage is a single anaesthetic, single hospital stay and simultaneous recovery. It is recommended for patients under 70 with good cardiac reserve and both knees severely affected. Your surgeon will assess your suitability and explain the risks and benefits in detail.
Arthroscopy is preferable for torn ligaments, meniscus tears, loose bodies and cartilage damage — tiny incisions, very low infection rate, fast recovery (most go home the same day). However, severe arthritis or major fractures typically require different approaches. Our surgeons always recommend the least invasive approach that achieves the best clinical outcome.
